Cairns RSL Club Veterans Tournament 2012

The club hosted our 2012 Cairns RSL Club Veterans tournament at Dolphin Oval in Stratford for the first time – the home ground for the up and coming Stratty Daddies. They are a keen group of (older) lads making their way into the rugby union fraternity. Whilst the numbers were a little down on previous years (competing with the Vintage and GO festivals) the event was a lot of fun nonetheless. The day was perfect, the field nice and grassy and plenty of rugby, food and drinks for everyone.

The ladies toiled away all day in the kiosk to satisfy all appetites and the Stratty Daddies manned the bar and played games too.

Our Patron John Lambie was again our guest and dinner emcee. He introduced us to Dick Cocks and his lovely wife Glynis. Dick played for the Wallabies in the early to mid-seventies and spent a stretch in South Africa playing and coaching. He entertained guests at the dinner with his stories of old and we will have to say that after the dinner … “well – what happens on tour stays on tour doesn’t it Dick” (but see the photos page anyway).

The Redland Mud Crabs made the journey to our event for the first time. We are pretty sure they had a good time by all accounts and we thank them for their support.

Our sponsor, the RSL Club was very taken with our gift to them this year – the mounted dressed Croc Head – they are trying to find somewhere safe to display it.
